Solvents in Space: Utilizing Hansen Parameters to Enhance Solvent-Based Cleaning Processes

By: Austin American Technology
Published: 2/22/2010

Uncover the theory behind the Hansen Parameter and Hansen Space, and learn how these two elements can be used to select the optimum solvent for a particular cleaning job.

When cleaning electronic equipment it is not always possible to use water. Sometimes solvents must be employed to remove a residue of interest. Solvents are very useful instruments for cleaning; however, they must be selected carefully to avoid damaging the labels on an instrument, or even the instrument itself.

The solvent selection process has been demystified by the development of Hansen parameter. This parameter is based on three components; dispersive/cohesive force, polar cohesive force, and the hydrogen bonding parameter.
